A look at the concepts and levels of “citizenship”

Dr. Vahid Tolooei, PhD

For many of us, becoming a Canadian and living as a Canadian merely means just receiving a Canadian passport, and we assume that in doing so we have taken ourselves or our families away from the situations which we had worked so hard to escape from. Situations from which we have immigrated away from, in order to live in a society where more opportunities are provided and a more peaceful lifestyle is offered. But does possessing a Canadian citizenship or citizenships in general only mean that? Do citizenships end after receiving a passport, after what is called naturalization? It seems that the process of naturalization, for which Canada requires us to stay for 1095 days during a four year period as well as to pass some exams and to participate in the oath-taking ceremonies, possesses some other deeper aspects and dimensions. The citizenship is not complete unless it is accompanied by the feeling of belonging; until it influences our social life, enhances our knowledge about the political and social mechanisms of the society to which we have joined, and unless it leads us to a certain kind of individual and group behavior.
